South Africa is opening its doors to digital nomads, welcoming remote workers from around the world to experience its stunning landscapes and vibrant cultures while continuing their professional endeavours. Thanks to recent updates in immigration regulations, this exciting initiative offers a perfect blend of work and adventure in one of Africa’s most captivating destinations.

Plane, Visa and stamp

For South Africa, the new digital nomad visa brings in highly-paid individuals who work remotely for foreign companies, ensuring they don’t compete with local workers. By spending their valuable foreign currency, paying value-added tax (VAT), and purchasing goods and services from local businesses, digital nomads can significantly contribute to the South African economy.

New Visa Regulations: A Closer Look

Key Features of South Africa’s Digital Nomad Visa:

  • Duration: Valid for up to 3 years (with the possibility of renewal)

  • Work Flexibility: Allows remote work for foreign companies or as a freelancer

  • Employment Restrictions: Does not permit local employment within South Africa

While the visa application process will eventually be available online, applicants are currently required to submit their applications through South African missions or VFS centres abroad.
